Description

I know that there are already a few very established DA artists who make gorgeous koi ponds, but I've been dying to try this out since I first came across SmallCreationsByMel's tutorial many a month ago.

I didn't want to redo the traditional ponds over and over though, I had a very specific goal in mind from the first. I wanted to make Tui and La as realistically as I could. It took forever for me to get my hands on 2 part epoxy resin, which greatly slowed me down. I took a gander at Mel's tutorial for the body shape, but mostly I just looked at pictures from the episodes that featured the moon and ocean spirits.

I know this was a popular show, and I'm on the bandwagon %100. But the scenario about the moon and ocean spirits really resonated with me. I know it's a little silly to get so emotionally attached to a nick show, but damn this storyline really got me! Maybe it's because I'm pagan and into different kinds of spirituality, I don't know. But I love it. I will be making Tui and La again, most certainly into jewelry once I get or make some accessories.

The muddy areas are chocolate colored sculpey III. The koi are mostly sculpey III, though the fins are premo. The small pebbles at the bottom are all handmade; translucent sculpey rolled in chalk dusts. I wanted it to look like there are banded agates down there. I also sprinkled a bit of craft sand to fill out the look.

The lotus is translucent premo dusted with pink pastels and accented with tiny yellow premo pieces. The lily pad is also premo. I used Amazing clear casting two part epoxy resin, and this was my very first time doing any of it.... never made a fish, never used resin, never tried to hand make microscopic agates.
I'm a very happy camper. :squee:
I decorated the top of the lid to be reminiscent of the oasis, but it was a bit of a mess so I won't show it.

I know that Bon-AppetEats has become very well-known for her altoid-tin ponds. I double checked with her before using one, just to be courteous. I'm not trying to poach other artists' work.

*updated*
I added a wedding picture of me and my husband to double this piece as a picture frame! I'm so excited with the concept, I'm now doing it with all of the ponds I make myself, and offering it with any I sell on etsy.

This was my very first resin piece, and I did not mix the resin thoroughly. It remained sticky. I glazed it with triple thick, and once dried the glaze separated and gave the illusion of very thin sheets of ice over the water. I love this effect, you can see it a bit in the smaller updated pic I attached to the old one.
